Death Penalty: Information needed on Death Sentence and Execution Statistics in Singapore this year

Posted by under Human Rights Watch on 20 December 2000

In October the Straits Times reported that narcotics officers had made their biggest haul this year when they caught a drug trafficker -- a 45- year-old cleaner-- and a younger client. The younger man had five one-kilo blocks of cannabis in a plastic bag. The older suspect led narcotics officers to a vacant house where they found another 154g of cannabis. Both men will face the death penalty if convicted.

Another four drug traffickers, aged between 33 and 50, and 97 drug users were caught during the anti-drug swoop.

Three others were arrested: a 28 year-old woman with five sachets of heroin and, associated with her, a cab driver, 33, and a coffee shop assistant, 36, with 17 sachets of heroin, 14 sachets of the drug ice, 800 sleeping pills and equipment to package the drugs.

In November, Singapore and the USA signed a ground-breaking mutual assistance treaty to fight drug trafficking and drug-money laundering. The Drug Designation Agreement will provide assistance to each other in investigations, prosecutions, witness testimonials, providing documentation etc.
