Save JBJ Political Rally
01 April 2001

When SM Lee Kuan Yew was asked recently whether he would step down soon, he pointedly asked the reporter in return, "What would I do?" The same can be said of JBJ. What will he do if he is made a bankrupt and be completely out of the fray of the next elections. Like how SM Lee is an icon of Singapore politics, so is JBJ. Of course, for the establishment, he is the anti-hero and hence needs to be challenged.

Why JBJ must be saved?
(Think Centre)

21 March 2001
When SM Lee Kuan Yew was asked recently whether he would step down soon, he pointedly asked back the reporter “What would I do?” The same can be said of JBJ. What will he do if he is made a bankrupt and be completely out of the fray of the next elections. Like how SM Lee is an icon of Singapore politics so is JBJ, of course for the establishment he is the anti-hero and needs to be challenged.
The courts have made the decision. The people should respect it. However, the people can also help JBJ to defray the cost that he is supposed to pay. By coming out in numbers we do not undermine the decision of the court. It is also not making a statement to the PAP. It is just part and parcel of saving a man who has always tried to do his best for the people of this country. At least, if we use a electoral statistics as a bench mark, at least 40 percent of the population will support him and we do know that a lot of PAP voters support him on certain issues.

By trying to save him, we as the people will allow him another chance to prove himself at the polls. We know he wants the best for his people and we also know that he always was brave and critical of the government in parliament. He never succumbed to the pressures of being an opposition politician and we all know him as the lion of Singapore politics. For some, he was the only man who stood up to Lee Kuan Yew and that meant a lot for so many people who were disaffected by PAP policies.

History is always on the side of the winners. Yet JBJ constantly spars and jostles with history to establish his belief for a Singapore based on justice and democracy. He is standing alone waiting and with the sun behind his back to make the final comeback. He has fought the good fight but can we abandon our fighter when he needs us most. It is one last fight, one for his belief and one for the love of Singapore. Let us shed away our prejudices, ideologies, political strategies and even our apathy to give this gladiator the prized sword to gain his entry into the arena. We all know it is going to be hard. Let us give and give in kind to JBJ. Support him at the coming rally. That is of course if we get the permit.
