Show of Support and Solidarity

Think Centre has had a show of support from New York to Malaysia with regards to the ongoing investigations into the events that took place on 10/12/2000, International Human Rights Day. But local voices have been silent until we received the following letter…………and more are coming in......

It was Sunday, December 10, 2000. More than 100 people gathered at the Speaker's Corner in Hong Lim Park. Some wore white t-shirts emblazoned with "Abolish ISA" in red and others dressed rather casually. After all, it was a weekend! And the weather was sunny and dry but not too hot.

These people were there to observe International Human Rights Day. It was a day when serious and concerned Singaporeans among them the members of Think Centre and Open Singapore Centre, co-organisers of the event, came together to reflect sadly on Singapore's disgraceful record on human rights.

Several persons registered to speak among them James Gomez, Executive Director of Think Centre, and J B Jeyaretnam, Secretary-General of the Worker's Party and Chairman of the Open Singapore Centre. One constant theme that emerged was the emphasis on the importance of human rights and why Singaporeans should not be denied of their rights.

A final word to the Think Centre. It took courage and conviction in what they did on Human Rights Day. I know because I was there. I support Think Centre's activities and hope to become an ordinary member soon. The Centre should not be intimidated by the police investigations. It is the police that are in the limelight over how they are handling the Speaker's Corner issue.
