Sri Lanka: Urgent Appeal for Humanitarian Assistance

Massive earthquake and killer waves, which slammed into coastal towns and villages across south and south east Asia, killing 76,000; Red Cross says dead could exceed 100,000. Millions of people are affected and displaced in India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the Maldives, and other countries.

Northeast Sri Lanka:
21,575 Dead and 700,000 Displaced

Latest figures gathered by TamilNet, TCHR and Sri Lanka Government sources indicate a casualty figures of 21,575 dead, 10,000 still missing and 700,000 displaced in the worst ever disaster Sri Lanka has encountered by the tsunami waves that hit the island Sunday morning.

The Sri Lanka Red Cross Trincomalee district branch is deploying volunteers with the assistance and collaboration of ICRC, International Organization for Migrants , Danish Demining Team, Halo Trust, JRS and UNHCR has been providing emergency health services and humanitarian services to the victims who had suffered injuries due to the Tsunami Tidal waves.

Urgent Appeal for Humanitarian Assistance:

Milk food for children, clothing, blankets, bed sheets, mats, dry rations, drinking water, toilets and urgent medicines were identified as the immediate requirements for the displaced population housed in public buildings. List of urgent items:

1. Food (includes milk powder, precooked food) for 80 000 familes, 3 times/day, meals for two weeks.

2. Non food items (includes kitchen utensils, 100 000 mats)

3. Clothing and blankets (special concern for women and children)

4. Drugs (paracetamol, antibiotics, dressings, disposable syringes)

5. water purification tablets (500 000) and water containers (5 lit. capacity)

6. Temporary shelters (25,000 tents for a family of 4 and 50 medical tents) portable generators (50)

The death toll across 12 nations rises to more than 76,700. The race was on to try to prevent an outbreak of diseases and curb food shortages among millions of homeless, which the U.N. health agency said could kill as many as the waves and quake. While Sri Lanka said it was getting its first reports of measles and diarrhea, paramedics in southern India began vaccinating 65,000 survivors against cholera, typhoid, hepatitis A and dysentery.
