Letters to the Author |
Courage to Speak UpON THE COURAGE TO SPEAK UP Finally, you have said what everyone is afraid to say. My congratulations on exposing the problem behind Singapore politics. The book is indeed revealing and enlightening. It shows how afraid people are to speak up on issues that they are uncomfortable with. The threat is very real. People with opposing views are treated with contempt and silenced by their peers. In certain cases, they are treated as dissidents and tailed by the authorities. I know of certain individuals whom have criticized the government. After that, they find it hard to secure jobs in the government and private sectors. They are monitored closely and even their phone lines are tapped. All this happening in our democratic country! Your book was indeed interesting and the need for people to speak out on issues concerning Singapore long awaited. I would think that the mindset here is to watch what other people say first and then follow. This is essentially the Singapore mentality. No one wants to take the lead and possibly land themselves in hot soup! I would look out for future titles such as these and do keep up the excellent work! Ken Tan |
