Save JBJ Political Rally
01 April 2001

When SM Lee Kuan Yew was asked recently whether he would step down soon, he pointedly asked the reporter in return, "What would I do?" The same can be said of JBJ. What will he do if he is made a bankrupt and be completely out of the fray of the next elections. Like how SM Lee is an icon of Singapore politics, so is JBJ. Of course, for the establishment, he is the anti-hero and hence needs to be challenged.

Think Centre Applies for Permit to Put up Banners at Rally
(Think Centre)

20 April 2001
Yaw Shin Leong, Project Director for Think Centre, took a trip down to the, Building and Construction Authority (BCA) at the Ministry of National Development (MND) building along Maxwell Road yesterday (19/4/2001) to apply for a permit to put up banners.
Up & Down We Go!
Up & Down We Go!
The application to put up 3 banners of 14 feet by 2.5 feet each with the wordings “Save Democracy – Keep JBJ in Parliament” on 28th April 2001 at Yio Chu Kang Stadium theoretically should be a straightforward exercise. However, it was proved otherwise.

Think Centre’s pre-prepared elevated top view sketches of the proposed positioning of the banners at the stadium are not sufficient. The BCA requirements of banners display additionally need the sketches of the locality plan, floor plan, cross section, together with the elevated top view sketch plan and most importantly the authorization stamp of the building’s owner (The Singapore Sports Council) is required.

This permit application is indeed a reflection of an irony of terms; of Singapore’s strive towards Public Service 21, of which efficiency and effectiveness should be the key words of the day! A One-stop permits application centre for events staging would have been the most appropriate.

Read on for further updates as Think Centre mingles its way through this bureaucratic red tape!
