Save JBJ Political Rally
01 April 2001

When SM Lee Kuan Yew was asked recently whether he would step down soon, he pointedly asked the reporter in return, "What would I do?" The same can be said of JBJ. What will he do if he is made a bankrupt and be completely out of the fray of the next elections. Like how SM Lee is an icon of Singapore politics, so is JBJ. Of course, for the establishment, he is the anti-hero and hence needs to be challenged.

Lack-Lustre Bugging by ST Reporter at JBJ Political Rally Press Briefing
(Think Centre)

12 March 2001 by Michael Cheng
Last Friday night saw the Think Centre office in a bustle again. A press briefing was under way to announce an upcoming political rally in support for besieged politician (and Non-Constituency Member of Parliament) J. B. Jeyaretnam; whose political life hung at the mercy of 2 law suits that could strip him of his parliamentary seat.
Our Blue-Striped Comrade
Our Blue-Striped Comrade
Like bees to honey, the media came in full-force (cameras, note pads, audio recorders and even a few Student reporters from NTU!) once the citizen initiative was announced on our web site. Obviously, they smell a scoop and they came hungry for a piece of the action.

The usual formalities ensured with James Gomez (Director of Think Centre) making a short press statement about the purpose of the rally, the location (and its significance) and various logistic details. Present were other members of the citizen committee organising this event – all of whom are doing so in their personal capacity.

With the mundane part of the conference out of the way – the juicy scoops await our friends! Like vultures, the paparazzi fielded questions of varied trickiness and spice. While most of the press and media fielded questions respectfully and with the expected professional journalistic flair – one curious personality stood out like a sore thumb.

A certain Straits Times reporter seems to have came with an alternative agenda in mind – fielding leading questions that seems to corner our hosts into making a premature stand on certain issues.

“What would you do if the permit is not approved? Would you carry on with the fund-raising?” Now does that sound like a leading question to you?

Curiously, this came hot on the heels of a Parliamentary resolution stating that the media are not to engage in domestic politics. Maybe our boys at ST should keep an eye on their own media hounds; lest they fall foul of the law. Oh my, the horror…

All in all, the media behaved amicably and respectfully – albeit the lack-lustre bugging by our comrade in blue stripes. Alas, all is well.

One will have to wait and see how the application for the permit plays itself out. Perhaps, we might still stand a fighting chance to see some aural action after all. Yes! Let the Cheng San fire blaze once again at Yio Chu Kang Stadium.
