A tale of survival
(Think Centre)

24 February 2004 by Tony Soh
And before I could wrap up my analysis of when a cleaner will appear, whether the seat is dirty and whether to sweep the tissue paper off the seat and risk being fined for littering, a foreigner suddenly planted himself into the seat.
Years ago, a luxury cruise liner sank and a boatload of survivors managed to land their boat on a deserted island, which was carpeted by jungles and swamps.

However the survivors took off from the island not long after because they complained that the swamps looked dirty and that they were not able to clear out a space in the jungle for building shelters without their maids. They were also afraid that they might be sued for living off someone’s island without the necessary permits.

The next day, a waiter from the doomed ship managed to reach the island by keeping himself afloat with a wooden plank.

I was trying to keep my balance in a sea of human bodies inside the MRT train. It has been a tiring day at work and I wished that I could just plonk myself down onto a seat. Stretching my neck above the sea of human heads, I managed to spy an empty seat. I squeezed my way through and when I finally reached it, I hesitated to rest my bum on it because there was a tissue paper on the seat. And before I could wrap up my analysis of when a cleaner will appear, whether the seat is dirty and whether to sweep the tissue paper off the seat and risk being fined for littering, a foreigner suddenly planted himself into the seat. As a result of my inaction, I spent the remaining part of the journey watching him sitting comfortably in front of me, with a contented smile on his face. As for the tissue paper, it was lying on the floor of the train.

Two days after leaving the island, the boatload of survivors encountered a storm and were all drowned. An island resort now sits on the island and its owner used to work as a waiter on board a luxury cruise liner.
