Growing Unemployment: Policies Need To Change
(Think Centre)

14 July 2003 by Tan Bak Khoon Gary
Policy made in the past has yet to be revised. As unemployed parents try to downgrade to smaller flats, there are no social relief for those children who are staying in 5 rooms flats. Thats the law.
I would like to comment with regard to job available. There are more than 100,000 people whom are jobless and I am one of them. I have been jobless for more than 5 months and has seek help from the NE CDC. Besides seeking help from them, I have wrote thousands of letters & e-mails which I have yet to get a job.

I am willing to change line and tried applying from training, sales, administration, clerical, promoters, manufacturing to cleaners. I am still jobless!! Sitting at the very top high position will not help knowing what are the sufferring of the public. Neither is listening to feedback from their staff will understand the situations.

It is already bad that most of us is trying to make ends meet, but the cost of living keeps going up. Sitting on a cosy seat do not see or make things known. Getting down to the public, working with the 2 hands and knees on the job will make you understand more of what we are going through. We adult do not eat is one thing, but our children do need to eat.

The NE CDC has even applied for me a retraining skills. However, I was informed that I am rejected as I am over-qualified. While waiting, I seek enquiries with regard to rules and regulations in order to further cut my cost. But I found more shocking news install for me.

Policy made in the past has yet to be revised. There are some of us who are selling away our flats to a 1-3 rooms flat. However, in the mean time while waiting, there are no social relief for those children who are staying in 5 rooms flat. Why is there this standard. Policy are made to change and adjust to situations. However, it does not seem to be, as the most favourite words are " Thats the law".

The law is to protect and safe the innocence. Why is the statue holding the scale eyes are covered. Why is there a scale. But if the policy is to be so rigid then there is something wrong with the policy. Remember, adult are already having a hard time, what about children.

It is easy to say that relief can be applied. But the processing can kills the patience of a hungry man. So does the policy that has no compassion can turns the patience of a hungry man. What is the point of giving reliefs when other things are increasing.

Life in Singapore is so hard that it is already difficult to make ends meet. Is there a marriage life after marriage or a divorce life after marriage. Which is better with this current situation. Is it better to have 1 children or no children at all. What is the point of saying giving relief at one end, while the other end the cost is increasing. It is like I give a $25 rebate for example. But at the other end, I increase the price and taking back $40 to $50. Therefore what are rebates.

If there are more jobs available in the market, why is there an alarming increase in the unemployment rate. If this group of unemployed cannot find jobs in the next couple of months, what are they to survive on.
