Politics in Asia
(Think Centre)

20 August 2002 by Kevin Bathman
If there is one comment I’d like to make regarding politics in Asia, and in particular Singapore, it is that not enough people are taking any interest in politics or even insist on their voice being heard.
It is a terrible thing when people don’t sit up and speak their mind. It is worse when politicians put their own self-interest higher than the needs of the people. Politicians, after all, are public servants. Having lived abroad, I see the same thing happening with Asians. They rarely speak out about any issues, even if its an issue that affects them. Historically, the Asian mentality has always been “do your work quietly” and “let other people fight their battles”. They are happy to live a quiet existence, as long as we get to “make money”. This is precisely why the Asian race has been the scapegoat for various social issues in these Western countries.

If we keep putting our own self-interest above what’s right and the injustice that happens in some countries, things will never change. Remember that the Tiananmen Square tragedy became a catalyst for China to start changing their policies.

What is sad about this situation is that Asian people are rarely taught about giving an opinion, even if it is a flawed opinion. The point is they have an opinion. It is shocking to see the lack of interest in Asian people towards human rights issues or personal freedom.

Until we change our attitude toward “politics”, will Asia ever change. This is precisely the reason why no Asian country has ever reached a first-world status (Singapore is just kidding itself if it thinks itself as first world. If one truly sees the true political state it is in, it is surely to be regarded as third-world) – none has true personal freedom.
